Act Two

Scene: Morning. The twins are in their chairs, eating breakfast. Lori is in the kitchen, talking to Steven. She holds up a mango to test its ripeness.

Simone catches sight of the mango.

Simone: Apple.

Lori: This is a mango.

Simone: Apple?

Lori: Mango.

Lori puts down the mango and picks up an apple.

Lori: This is an apple.

Simone: Apple!

Lori: Would you like an apple?

Simone: Yeah? Apple?

Lori cuts up an apple and serves it to the twins.

Simone: Apple!

Have you noticed that your kids like to eat the foods they can say (or more or less say)? I don't know which comes first: the ability to name it or the desire for it, but it sure worked that way for us in the beginning.

But what about April? Maybe she wanted a mango?

The mango wasn't ripe yet :)

It's interesting, because they both really like oranges, too--I noticed this preference well before I noticed their like of apples. Nonetheless, 'orange' isn't a word yet (as far as I can tell).

You reminded me of a story my mother tells, about when I was quite small and in a cart at the supermarket, and the entire produce section was filled with a joyful shout of "Manzanaaaaaaa!" :)

So... seeing any fruit reminds her of her favorite fruit, which is apples, and so she then asks for it? Am I interpreting this right, with my non-parental inexperienced instincts?

I keep wondering if this has anything to do with learning the ABC's and "A is for Apple."

I think it's more like [livejournal.com profile] badgerbag suggested in the previous post: mangoes (and pears) fall into the classification "apple," and apples are delicious, so stop talking nonsense, Mom, and give me an apple!

Hm. It could be! Who knows what goes on in those nefarious Friday morning music classes...

No, no, no, you guys! Simone obviously wants an iPad.
