The 50th Anniversary Edition of the I Hate to Cook Book has just been released.

I mention it only because you all may be amused to learn: I am a secret fan. Now, I probably haven't read it in 30 years, and I hope they have fixed the gender politics aspects in the revision, insofar as that might be possible. But it was one of the very small pile of books that I really did obsessively re-read as a child. I was not a big re-reader in general, please note.

I think, paradoxically, that I re-read it because it was about food; also because it was funny and anti-pretentious. And so perhaps you see its influence in me even today.

Oh, I loved that book when I was a teenager. I think that was the book that started me on my "reading cookbooks for pleasure" kick. (I really do hate to cook, and also am not particularly good at it, but I love me a nice chatty cookbook, Al Sicherman's Caramel Knowledge probably being my favorite.)

Oh my gosh, I loved that book so much. And its sequels. I still check them out of the library sometimes.
