I just severely pruned my Netflix queue. So suggest me some movies?

off the top of my head

tideland - really gorgeous creepy movie by terry gilliam, came out last year.

the 2007 academy award nom. shorts are amazing. i highly recommend watching "west bank story."

three colors - have you seen? blue was the best one, imo.

matchstick johnny - roberto begnini at his slapstick finest. ditto night on earth, as long as you skip the short with winona ryder.

Thanks! I haven't seen any of these, though "Three Colors" is already in my queue.

I second the recommendation for Tideland. It's really intense at times, but wonderfully beautiful and surreal.

oh - and "earth" by deepa mehta, the same woman who made "fire." fire was beautiful and touching, and the issues were intense and profound, but from a filmmaking perspective i thought earth was a more well made movie. my indian friend was convinced that this is because i don't understand indian culture...

*shrug*

also, have you seen trembling before god?

Perfume is a must. I love this film. It is so sick and twisted and beautiful. Put it at the top of your queue.

(But you'll find "Matchstick Johnny" under the Italian title, "Johnny Stecchino")

Also:

The Squid & the Whale - privileged people behaving badly, but also a great non-sanitized version of teenage boyness.

From the "comedy" aisle

Undercover Brother. The spy spoof that is actually funny.

Matinee. A look back at those humorous days of the Cuban Missile Crisis.

Soapdish. Whoopi Goldberg, Robert Downey Jr., Sally Field, Kevin Kline, Cathy Moriarty... and all the scenery they can chew.
