I remember being very perturbed to learn that many cultures had the black/white=bad/good thing going on way before European colonization came along. Yes, even African cultures. I had to wrap my head around that one.

(And then, yes, those ideas got attached to skin color, and all the complications got much simplified by our simple-minded language. *sigh*)
