(no subject)

So I realized yesterday (inadvertently assisted by a question [livejournal.com profile] deepad asked) that my mother, and possibly my grandfather as well, qualify as Third Culture Kids. I told my mom, and then pointed out it was something she and the president had in common. She was appropriately tickled.

Hurray for TCKs.

Some of my friends have turned down opportunities that would involve moving because they don't want their kids to be TCKs. Increased suicide/depression rates and all. I know they're only trying to do right by their kids but it drives me nuts.

I know it's not the same as wanting your kid not to be gay, because you can control where your child lives and not hir sexuality. But it still hits the core of my identity, somehow.

My parenting philosophy hinges on the idea that kids are by and large pretty adaptable to circumstance, as long as their adult caretaker ties are robust and loving. It seems pretty obvious to me, but I can also tell that I may be well out of the mainstream for thinking this way. :/
