So, uh, I made Oakland Local today with a post called "An Open Letter In Response to Some Responses to George Zimmerman’s Acquittal." Those of you on Facebook might have already seen this.

Also of interest: "How Do I Explain the Martin Verdict to My Kids?", which we have also been discussing on Facebook. Let me tell you, though, "how do you explain the Martin Verdict to four-year-olds to whom you've just had to explain that sharks will not come out of the water and eat them at the aquarium" is an even tougher question.

Serious question: do you have to explain the Martin verdict to four-year-olds at all? I guess my gut reaction would be that that kind of explanation starts around age 8-10.

I think you have to if they ask -- if they overhear stuff on the news, for example. My kids haven't asked, although they did ask "what's a protest?" the other night when the marchers were down on Lakeshore. (I answered "a protest is when a bunch of people think someone made a wrong decision and they want to say so, so they all go outside and stand in the street and say so loudly." Or something like that.)

But apparently other kids maybe a year at most older than mine were definitely asking, thus the FB discussion. And, of course, I had to think of what my answer would be should the kids ask, "what are people protesting?"

*nods* I wasn't thinking about questions directly from kids; completely agree that those should be answered, and that it's not easy.
