transit

Yesterday I took the Transbay bus into work.

Although BART is a substantial (though do-able in good weather) walk from my place, the Transbay P (Piedmont/Oakland Ave) line stops about three long blocks from my house, just before getting on the highway. It takes only ten minutes longer to get into the city this way, and then it's only three blocks from my office.

(I confess that, in my ignorance, I used to think that there was *a* Transbay bus line. But there are many.)

It's a very cozy ride. I can see why many people prefer it to BART. It's not as convenient -- I think they run about every 20 minutes to a half hour? -- and it costs more money, but compared to other modes of public transportation in the Bay Area (and I have tried most of them), it's swank. To those thinking of visiting from the city, I recommend this as your personal chariot.

Also, as it happens, the bus line (#11) to/from the Broadway BART stations also stops at the same place I picked up the P line. And across the street is a dessert place that looks worth investigating.

are those three flat blocks? I will definitely try it, I like transbay buses. Once we even got from the city to the oakland airport without using BART.

Yes, three flat blocks!

The F line is actually faster for me than BART. It takes me 25 minutes to get from my house to the financial district on the TransBay bus. Love it. It's not too expensive for me because I have a disabled pass.

When I worked in SF, I took the bus over BART about 98% of the time. I worked downtown, never too far from the terminal. The view of the Bay from the bridge was worth the price of admission. I would so rather be working in SF than Pleasanton! Public transit commute; views; great choices for eating out; convenient to the opera house. If only I didn't like my job and the people I work with....

The main problem with the bus is that it is more vulnerable to traffic problems. Thursday, I arrived 1/2 hour late to the city because of the rain.

Although on the other hand, BART seems vulnerable to all sorts of delays due to police actions, fires on the tracks, trains stacked too tightly in the tunnel...
