I described it to the crowd at the open house last night as what would happen if John Le Carre and Tim Powers sat down with the Wachowski Brothers and said "Let's make a supernatural movie set in Russia."
I 2nd the veritable ass-kickingness of it, in that "deep characterization and really good acting kicks ass" way.
I was thinking more that whatever combination of influences went into it involved staking the Wachowskis through the heart and burying them at a crossroads at midnight, actually. No sappy quasi-Christianity, no sitting around for ages engaging in adolescent quasi-philosophy, none of the things that bugged me about The Matrix and really bugged me about the sequels.
I'll probably see it again within the next couple of weeks. Glad you all enjoyed it.
