Random moments from my trip to Chicago:

I lost the last of my dead thumbnail moments after touching back down in San Francisco. After a dose of hand cream, the nail bed doesn’t look too gruesome, but it’s awfully odd to completely lack a nail there.

[livejournal.com profile] black_pearl_10 was very tolerant of my aching desire to visit both the Seminary Co-Op Bookstore and, across the street, the Oriental Institute, especially now that the latter’s Mesopotamia room is finally renovated and open to the public. Its current show is, unsurprisingly, "Ancient Iraq," an overview of the area since prehistory. A little too general for my purposes, but still interesting.

What I bought at the Seminary Co-Op:

What Genes Can’t Do by Lenny Moss, which discusses two concepts of the gene, one that inherits the theory of preformation, and one that inherits the theory of epigenisis.

Travels with a Tangerine by Tim Mackintosh-Smith, which partially retraces the journey of Ibn Battutah.

The Eater’s Guide to Chinese Characters by James D. McCawley – now back in print!

Tsukuji: The Fish Market At The Center of the World by Theodore C. Bestor, an ethnographic study of the famous Tokyo fish market.

Accounting For Taste: The Triumph of French Cuisine by Priscilla Parkhurst Ferguson, as a gift for [livejournal.com profile] imnotandrei.

I also bought Queen of Sheba: Treasures from Ancient Yemen, ed. St John Simpson, from the Oriental Institute museum store.

G. bought me a fitted Cubs cap and a soccer scarf commemorating the game. I am still too embarrassed to wear the cap in public, because as G. so astutely notes, it makes me look like Michael Moore. But I recognize it as a gift of love, and so it makes me happy anyway.

And oh yeah, the game – US vs. Poland in a friendly soccer match. There was a huge turnout, and though I’ve discussed it as a double home game, let’s not kid ourselves – the Polish fans vastly outnumbered the US fans. And when Poland scored first, it showed. There was a strange thrill when the cheer went up and I wasn’t a part of it. It was…awesome.

Chicago soccer fans of any stripe seem quite friendly and fun to be around.

I stayed with my friends [livejournal.com profile] innerdoggie and [livejournal.com profile] tyrranio and tried not to scare G. too much with the depths of our mutual geekery. They were terribly gracious hosts and made excellent lemonade and iced tea to keep us hydrated, and even cleared out the spare room for us. I've seen that spare room in its natural state, so I know this was a generous gesture indeed. Thanks again, guys, and I hope we weren't too much of a burden.

Sour cherry preserves might possibly be addictive.

And I have to apologize to [livejournal.com profile] imnotandrei, for I have discovered that my taste for ice cream fled with the lack of true humidity in the Bay Area. At some point during this hot, muggy weekend, I thought, "I would kill for a Dove bar right now." Haven’t felt that way in simply ages.

And finally: may I never be on the L when they’re doing work on the tracks again.

More if I remember. For now, I have zine submissions to examine and partner cuddling to catch up on. Not to mention the demands of the cats, who wish me to catch up on my affection quota as soon as possible.
