1. I have not forgotten about Pillow Fight Club. But it is the winter, it is dark and tending toward rainy, and finding suitable venues is hard.

2. I am the type of person for whom online sites recommend books like Hittite Diplomatic Texts, Second Edition. Sad but true.

3. I have also met somewhat of a kindred spirit in Bill Buford. The one negative review of Heat that I ran across complained about his digressions into the history of pasta and polenta. But in those chapters, I recognized myself -- suddenly obsessed with some fine point about food history and preparation that absolutely nobody else would even bother to reflect upon for more than a moment, most of the time. These are the best parts of the book, for me. Even better than the stories from the kitchen, as exhilarating and entertaining as those are.

4. Speaking of which: "Use tongs." Ha! But *my* favorite moment was whisking the polenta in Tennessee, with Riccardo from Bologna standing behind him.

5. I really need to redo my website.

1. My home computer's power supply is probably dying. (Note to Saturday's guests: this probably accounts for the mysterious burnt plastic smell, which exists only on one side of said computer, and I sniffed the other side during our explorations Saturday night. Still: the house isn't going to burn down!) This is, as they say, inconvenient. I have lots of things to get done.

2. This week, I am watching porn. A lot of porn. My voting deadline is next Monday. Watching a lot of porn is boring, except when it's not. It's especially boring in that I will not be doing much of anything else, including cooking. And writing. And shopping for Xmas presents (though we might get a tree). And even going to the gym, which sounds more fun than sitting on the couch, remote in hand, for all that time. I may need some major physical fun after this week is over. Dancing on Saturday was nice, but not enough.

1. Things in my freezer that I really should eat up:

a) a lot of ice cream (I accidentally overbought), mostly vanilla
b) a lot of oxtails
c) a big slab of spareribs
d) some quail

2. G. says that I relate to food on a different plane than most other people. I don't know. I guess so.

3. But his comment made me realize something -- I am not shy in restaurants. I am friendly and warm and courteous and undemanding, and not shy. How did that happen?

It occurred to me this weekend that, in all likelihood, there were a bunch of readers of my LJ out there who are convinced that they're missing the juicy stuff (whatever that might be) because I have not included them on the relevant filter.

This post is just to say that I don't use filters all that much, except for invitations that I post here, sometimes. I don't even use the friends lock a lot of the time, unless I'm making remarks about work (including freelance work). Mostly, I try to confine myself to things I'd be willing to have overheard in public.

In other words, what you see is what you get. That's the way my LJ rolls.

Btw, this might also account for the cryptic quality some of you have commented upon. I try not to be intentionally mysterious, but I'm also just not interested in posting all the details of my day to day life, the ups and downs of my mood, etc. This is not to criticize those who do. It's just that I bore my own self even typing up the entries. It's one of the things that more or less killed off my private journaling.

So there you are. If any of you felt left out in the cold, even subconsciously, now you know that the cold is all there is :)

Thinking back to previous LJ conversations...

You know where I tend to dislike memoir the most? Erotic anthologies.

I thought at first that this might just be writer's bias -- i.e. if I get another CFS looking for my "true first time tales," I may scream -- but then I thought about just reading one of those anthos and cringed just as hard. No, not for me from either end.

I know several writers, whose stuff I enjoy very much, who are essentially erotic memoirists, and that's fine, and I will read their collections. But I think I prefer this stuff either as a one-author collection, or intermixed with fiction. Otherwise...I dunno. Something about it all rubs me the wrong way. Too kiss and tell? Too show-offish? I can't put my finger on it, yet.
