OK, this is the last thing I am going to say about Gaytanamo, the porno feature I mentioned back a few posts ago. It seems I wasn't the only one a little put off by the title and concept, and there's been a bit of a controversy in a teapot about it on the Webz over the past week or so (chronicled in the link, above). Now they're calling it a "dark comedy," btw. And Fleshbot makes the not-unreasonable point that prison rape and torture fantasies are not exactly uncommon in gay porn (or in the heads of people like me, cough). Still, I see the producers trying to play both sides of the street. It's a comedy. It's satire. But -- it's just a movie, just a porno, it doesn't mean anything. I guess I differ from some of the other critics of the movie, in that I don't think it's disgusting, horrible, inappropriate, beyond the pale...I just think it's in really, really, really bad taste. And part of that bad taste is the "aw shucks it's just a movie, until I'm called on it and then it's a satire and that gives it intrinsic value even if the satire is lame and forced and contrived and dull" attitude that the filmmakers take. 'K? Are we all clear on that now? Good.

Cornell op-ed writer states without irony, "Porn is, first and foremost, a teaching tool."

I think I feel ill.

And I even left out the part where Sex and the City is the girl's version of porn. I guess that's an improvement over that book we were discussing, at least. Maybe. If you squint.

1. Suddenly I crave sardines and butter on bread. Open-face sardine sandwich. Yum.

2. I have too many recipes. (Some would argue that I have too many cookbooks as well, but I disagree. It's the context-free clips that begin to overwhelm.) How do you all, out there, organize your recipes?

3. Zadie Smith's introduction to The Year's Best Nonrequired Reading 2003, of all things, is one of the most thought-provoking essays I've read recently (and possibly ever) about reading, writing, and the relationship thereof.

4. As discussed last night, free sex toys are overrated.

5. I am a lucky person.

The meme bothers me, actually, but it bothers me in the way that I can't stop worrying a sore tooth.

So.

Do you envy me? Why?
