Feb. 14th, 2011 01:07 pmI'm currently reading about, among other things, the Hilton Sisters, conjoined twins whom you may recognize if you've ever seen Freaks. They were quite renowned in the '20s and '30s as entertainers, not just in circuses and sideshows but on vaudeville and in other movies too.
They also basically had to sue for emancipation in 1931 from their guardian, who bought them from their birth mother in 1908 when they were infants and clearly and explicitly thought she owned them.
ETA: In fact, she willed them to her daughter and her husband, who were the parties to the suit.
