It's been a week, and somehow I've entirely forgotten to mention that I saw "Jesus Christ, Vampire Slayer" at the Castro as part of the film festival last Monday. Due to economics, we've mostly skipped the festival (and the International Film Fest earlier this year too), and I even missed the new Dracula movie. But somehow, we couldn't resist.

It was good that we failed dismally. This was another one of those movies that seemed tailored to me -- it referenced old kung-fu movies, Italian horror films, and so on and so forth in a big, glorious mix. Plus it had, as we later learned from the Q&A session with the director, enough interesting theology to write a paper on (and to keep that part of my brain that never stops thinking amused). And everyone lives happily ever after, including the very sexy lesbian vampire. Really, I needed a big plug of silly fun, and this was it. I may have to own it someday.

It was an added pleasure that [livejournal.com profile] zille and her partner were able to join us. And it's also deliciously naughty to play hooky and go to the movies on a Monday afternoon when everyone else is supposed to be working.

So, this weekend, my mother and youngest sister Emma were around. (Emma is 12, for those keeping score at home.) They weren't staying with me; they were staying with my uncle in Petaluma. But we spent most of Friday and Saturday together. We went to the Exploratorium, to the farmer's market, and to the ocean. (Emma's reaction to the ocean: "too windy!" It was pretty brisk on Friday.) Mom seemed to particularly like the Exploratorium, and also dim sum lunch (at Ton Kiang, because it was between the farmer's market and the Exploratorium, roughly). So did Emma. I told her that she is now officially more adventureous than her older sister Jill ("the middle sister"; I am the oldest), who had a hard time with food when she visited me for her high school spring break a couple years ago. Emma liked the barbecue pork buns, but even better were the fried shrimp balls. She split two orders with me.

They both also seemed to enjoy our ice cream cones from Mitchell's, but then again who wouldn't? Emma got chocolate, Mom got strawberries and cream. I let Emma try my Thai Tea, and she thought it was pretty good.

Emma brought a handful of mouse-shaped cat toys to entertain the kitties with. Fritzi grabbed the first and *growled* at the other cats while she systematically destroyed it in about five minutes flat.

We didn't get to make lemonade. But she did get to pick a lemon from the tree for me so that I could complete making lunch for myself on Friday.

And they brought me a loaf of Amish cinnamon bread, plus a half-cup of starter and a recipe for more. The loaf is gone now. That stuff is delicious.

Now they're back home.

The net result of all this activity, besides a general warm fuzzy family feeling (yes, I like my family-of-origin, strange I know), is that I am now behind on my deadlines. Posting this isn't helping, I suspect, unless I consider it warm-up for writing my reviews this evening. I love rationalizations.
