Oct. 27th, 2005 11:40 am1. White Sox won! Yay!
2. So now can I be irritated at the fact that a) the coverage of their fandom featured almost no black people, and made it sound like the South Side was still populated by good old blue-collar Irish, Polish, and German folk? To really understand my ire, you must realize my father's family is blue-collar German, and he grew up surrounded by Polish and Irish people.* They live in the near south suburbs...where everybody moved to escape the black people, who actually live in the city limits. (And of course now, a lot of the south side is also Latino. Didn't see many of those folks on TV either.)(While we're here, I should note that I saw hardly any South Side exterior shots at all, at all. Funny that.)
3. Can I also be irritated that nobody (except
cindymonkey, wave!) bothered to note that the Sox haven't won since...they cheated and deliberately threw the Series? Hello? If anyone deserved a curse, it was them. I forgive them and I'm glad it's over, but come on.
4. Maybe it's b/c my family is from the South Side (see above), but where did the notion that the Sox are Chicago's "second" team come from? It's not my fault that WGN got a cable feed and thus globalized Cubs fandom. Oh, that's a whole other story, isn't it?
5. White Sox won! Yay!
* It is also worth noting here that my father's family were Cubs fans. Partly b/c they were German and Lutheran, and the rest of the neighborhood were Polish/Irish...and Catholic. And, it goes without saying, Sox fans.

Date: 2005-10-27 06:45 pm (UTC)fwiw, the Montreal Gazette subtitle under the title about the win was "Say it ain't so, Joe." I didn't read the article, but then it's been a couple of weeks since I had the time to read anything in the Gazette except film reviews and timetables Fridays.

Date: 2005-10-27 06:52 pm (UTC)i am familiar with the south side, and while name checking the irish, polish, german people was all well and good, i was horrified that they didn't mention / show ANY black fans and just jumped right into describing them as police officers, firefighters, etc. when we all know there are a lot of black people and fans on the south side... yeesh!

Date: 2005-10-27 06:54 pm (UTC)I'm glad they won, not because of the drought (although I sympathize) but because I hate the Astros for beating the Phillies to the wild-card spot.
