Check out the algorithm if you have a chance. It's weird. And totally inaccurate in my case -- I ran a couple articles and some stories through the version at Bookblog, and the results were all over the place.

Well, there was maybe one small hint of a trend. Apparently I imitate a man quite well. It's hard to explain what I mean without going into extensive boring detail; you'll just have to trust me on this one (or talk to me in person).

You know, I plugged nearly all my friends into that tool, and just about everyone was within 5 points of you, all of them on the masculine side.

My 2 a.m. pop theory: We are all becoming butch-er in our language as a reaction to misogyny. In other words, you gotta talk like a man if you want anyone to listen.

I think it's a fine 2am pop theory.

That's part of what I was getting at when I said I imitate a man well. There are certain things, both fiction and non-, I've written where I'm deliberately mimicing a style that's not naturally mine -- and all of those pieces tested out "male."

More fun: the original paper argues that female language usage is more associated with fiction styles of writing, and male usage with nonfiction.
