On Romance

I did promise romance, didn't I? That is, I promised to tell you all what I consider romantic.

I like presence. (No, not presents, though I like them, too!) Attention. Focus. Time alone. Surprises and gifts and things that mean: you were paying attention. You noticed. You were thinking of me.

That's it. Pretty simple.

The hard part is when it comes with strings, right? "Look! I payed attention! Pay attention to me back!" The hard part is when it interlocks with the shyness. I will never be a master of the extravagant gesture (giving or receiving), because I can't bear to put myself on the spot like that. I will instead have to master the equivalent of the quiet, spoken glance, the kiss on the back of the neck. Or, the surprise that I am not present to witness, or that I can facilitate and then step into the background. I seem to be pretty good at that.

Basically, I am a big housecat. When you look at me, I will suddenly have to diligently wash myself.

my exhusband defined flirting as paying attention to someone. at the end, this was one of the things that hurt the relationship very badly-- i didn't feel like he was paying attention to me.
