1. I finally used Panko (a brand of Japanese bread crumbs) the other day, to coat some pan-fried fish fillets. I had been dubious because Panko seemed so very, very trendy, and because usually I am too lazy to do the triple-dredge that using bread crumbs on fried food requires - normally, I just coat fillets in rice flour and spices and go to town. But, OK, Panko plus frying is a win. Especially with a little smoked pepper mixed in.
2. We took the ladies to watch Daddy and Uncle Bear Daddy play soccer yesterday at lunchtime. We set up right behind one of the goals and rolled around in the grass. Sometimes they watched, sometimes they tried to eat grass, sometimes they wanted to crawl into the stroller, and finally they wound down and took their bottles and began to nap. I think this would make a splendid picnic occasion in the future.
3. I took the wrong bus last week while running errands and instead of heading up the hill, I ended up heading down Grand, toward the bird sanctuary. Oops! I got out, called home to let G. know I was delayed, and stopped in at a funky little coffee shop. The woman behind the counter was very slow, but also very friendly, and nobody else seemed to mind the pace, so I just relaxed. At which point, an old woman pulled tr strap of my bag aside to read my t-shirt. Then she told me all about her recently repaired amethyst bracelet. I could tell she was a regular, and she seemed very nice otherwise, so I chalked up the unsolicited touch moment to old-lady privilege. Meanwhile, the counter woman made me iced tea from scratch. I think I will go back.
4. I've now visited Berkeley Bowl West twice. It's nice!

Date: 2009-08-21 06:00 pm (UTC)P.S. No fear: both are still big and mazelike enough to get thoroughly turned around in. (The crossing from organic to non-organic at West is particularly tricky, which is a euphemism for "impossible but looks possible".) You just run into less other people doing it.
