OK, folks, opinion poll time!

Do you all think I should apply to the AK Press job? (Thanks to amarama for the heads-up.)

Being a Publishing Insider (tm), I have heard, uh, mixed things about AK over time, so I am hesitating. I am certainly qualified, though; all the duties listed are essentially what I've been doing for Black Books over the past few years. Only this would be full-time, with benefits and vacation.

Give me advice, oh LJ sages!

i think ak is great. but i think working 40+ hours for 21K is jive.

Always apply, is my philosophy. You can always turn them down. I agree that they are expecting too much for too little - seems like they could expect half of market for that job, but not 1/3 or less, like they're offering.

Only if you're earning less than that now per hour. I'd say it's horrible pay for the hours, and I kinda doubt it's a great resume builder. What is their rep in the publishing world?

Another thing to consider is which direction you want to go. If you're looking for that kind of job in the future, it might be good, but if you're looking for more writing work, this will take you away from that.

On the other hand, insurance is a good thing.

I admit I don't know a thing about AK. (showing my radical political ignorance here, be gentle)

However, I've always been one who prefers to tinker from inside the machine rather than standing outside and screaming at it.

I think you should apply. And when offered the job negotiate for fewer hrs or more $$, but I think it is worth applying for.

I don't think the pay it that bad considering it's a small company and a collective. Check it out. Interview. If you hate them, then you know. And you can always refuse or quit. You have nothing to lose.
