Double Indemnity as a romantic movie? Wow. To each their own for sure!

Please wash the shock off of my face by suggesting to me your favorite romantic movie. Any flavor or definition of romance welcome -- in fact, the more the merrier.

The Big Sleep. Most romantic movie ever *sigh*. Runner-up: The Shop Around The Corner.

The moment in 'The Shop Around the Corner' when James Stewart turns up the collar of his coat to show the flower and just says 'I hope you aren't too disappointed' (or words to that effect) just broke my heart.

I probably don't need to say, but avoid the awful 'modernised' version 'You've Got Mail' which, while having a similar structure, manages to miss the point entirely.

There's also a musical version called 'She Loves Me' which has some okay songs and one fantastic one - a patter song 'Tonight At Eight' - which I would love to perform on stage someday...

A tough call over others but 'While You Were Sleeping' is probably my favourite. Partly because Sandra Bulloch is completely adorable in it and partly because I'd love to have her adopted family!

50 First Dates

It could be seen as a bit stalkery, but the last scene always makes me choke up.

His Girl Friday

I haven't seen it in a long time, but I suspect it helps if you swoon over Cary Grant the way I do.

Hmmm, two of my favoites: Music and Lyrics because even though it's Hugh Grant and Drew Barrymore playing the quintessential Hugh Grant and Drew Barrymore characters, they do it so well. The second is The Cooler with William H. Macy, Maria Bello and a truly frightening Alec Baldwin. Quite emotionally violent in places which I think makes the romantic aspects work all the more for me.

Notting Hill. I don't know why, it's so horribly cheesy, but I love it.

I guess my quaint, anachronistic romanticism only goes so far. Very first movie that pops into my head? 28 Days Later. With the director's ending please. For the more conventional definition of romantic movie, When Night is Falling, despite its problems, I still like a lot. *blush*

I realized, thinking about my movie tastes, that I don't go in for many romantic movies.

There are moments of The Lion In Winter that definitely qualify -- especially the ending. It's not exactly a "Love Conquers All" film, but it is a "Love Endures" film.

However, I think I'd have to go with frantically wriggling shrimp, cowboy-hat-wearing truckers, and Tampopo

for food and sex: Tampopo (and I hate mixing food with sex)

for sweet romance: Howl's Moving Castle - I love the film and how love is shown...

I'm so not a romantic movie kinda gal but ...
Amelie is lovely, & I agree about His Gal Friday with Carey Grant. Also good with Carey Grant (& Hepburn!), the Philadelphia Story.

Isn't there a romantic ending on Some Like It Hot? All I ever remember is the hotness with all the stockings in the train scene ... and I always thought Myrna Loy & William Powell were cutely romantic in the Thin Man movies. And I suppose My Big Fat Greek Wedding is romantic ... it's a wedding, after all.

An excellent choice, if I do say so myself (and I don't think I'm the only one in the household, either).
