I really need to find a good fish counter that stocks both high-end fish and things like sardines and mackerel and smelt.

My grandfather once dismissed mackerel as being good for nothing but bait (for snapper). He was, in fact, cutting it up for bait while he said it. I wanted to taste it so badly then. I don't know why. It just looked delicious.

My instincts were on point.

Anyway. Fish counters!

there is a fish monger I like near Monterrey Market-- or at least there was one last time I was there.

My housemate has done some really yummy things with fresh sardines, too.

Monterey Fish! (http://www.montereyfish.com/) They are awesome for things like shellfish and live crabs and salmon, but for "trash" fish, not so much. Though I think they did have sardines when I stopped in last week. (Alas, I was on public transit with babies on a hot day, which makes it kinda hard to take home any fish.)

Besides Monterey Fish, Hapuku in Rockridge Marketplace.

Love mackeral, not so much mild-mannered fish like snapper.

I love mackerel, especially in sushi.

Yes! mackerel is the best on sushi.

Pity I'm in MN so I can't try any of the fish markets mentioned :(

Oh good! I was going to suggest Tokyo Fish, but it's been almost 15 years since I lived in Albany & I was afraid they wouldn't still exist.
