I just became a blogger for Good Vibrations, about sex and parenting. I expected my first post to be about April's body curiosity, but then the Katy Perry-Sesame Street thing blew up. You can read my take on it here. (Read Charlie Glickman's comment, too.)

Speaking of April, btw, she came up with a new game yesterday: dropping toys down my shirt and then lifting it up to see if they'd fall out. It seems to tickle her immensely that the answer is "sometimes." Today she ran the control experiment, dropping puzzle pieces down her own shirt.

Totally agree about the context of the original song. The lyrics are just gross:

You change your mind
Like a girl changes clothes
Yeah, you PMS like a bitch
I would know

Ugh!

I will admit here that although I recognized the tune and the chorus, I am detached enough from pop culture that I had no idea about the tune as a whole or what it was about. At least partly b/c I wrote Perry way off after her first hit, y'know. Ew!

Yeah, I had the same knee-jerk reaction that you had -- On Noes, not the Boobies! But the song is both boring and disturbing, especially in the somewhat sexualized way that it was acted out on Sesame Street. They can do better than that.

And as someone who has played the advanced level of the dress-up game, I must say that her dress-up outfit is bland and unimaginative: where is the apron that could be used as a superhero cape; where are the handpainted paper wings; where is the crown made from an old tissue box? I can't blame Elmo for running away after he saw her sad attempt at dressing up. (Okay, I'll get off my femme soapbox. Apparently I have a lot of opinions about dressing up.)

What if it had been (say) Ernie or Murray rather than the near-infant Elmo? What if it had been Abby?

I don't think the Muppet choice changes the message much. Pairing Perry with Abby would lessen somewhat the hetero narrative aspect, but that's secondary to my eyes, and it would still be girl-pals acting out stereotypical and uninterrogated girl-roles (contrast "The Princess Show"), so still a problem.
