Butterflies and Chicken Salad
Apr. 10th, 2003 02:32 pmI saw a gorgeous butterfly in the back yard today. The guidebook says it's a "common buckeye." The wings are tan, but ornamented with huge yellow and black spots that are just striking.
It seems to favor the cornflower-blue pompom flowers. I don't know the name of the flowers because I bought a "wildflower seed mix" and the only thing I recognize among the blossoms are the California poppies.
We also have our very first morning glory blossom out.
Today for lunch, I polished off the last of my very yuppie chicken salad. Very Yuppie Chicken Salad: Take leftover chicken (for extra-yuppie chicken salad, cook up a chicken breast), throw in some dried cherries (shades of my Michigan heritage here), celery, and hazelnuts; add some mayonnaise and lots of salt and pepper. That's it. I also like chicken salad with green apples, but it's a little late in the season for those, I think. I made a sandwich out of it, but it could also be eaten over greens I suppose (baby greens or mesclun for that yuppie touch, of course).
I had to fight Steven off for the last serving, which is serious flattery considering he had never had chicken salad before.
