I often refrain from commenting on current events in this space b/c what I have to say is usually covered earlier and better by other people.

But there was a fatal and tragic shooting in Arizona this weekend. And it reminds me perhaps inevitably of the gun battle with CHP that occurred a few months ago on another weekend, out on the highway behind my house, while I was sitting at this very computer as it happens. One that was fortunately not ultimately fatal and tragic, which is why it was a brief blip on the local news radar and little more.

I offer this note simply to counter the current attempts to exceptionalize and isolate what happened in Arizona, to erase and obscure patterns. This is just to say: you can't fool me -- or anyone else who heard the gunshots that night.
