Dear Internet Hive Mind,

You wouldn't happen to know any concise historical book treatments of the British Empire's habit of building and maintaining island and floating prisons, would you? It's the latter -- prison ships deliberately out of land-based jurisdiction -- that I'm really interested in.

well, it is anything but concise, and I don't know for sure, but Jan Morris has that great trilogy on the British Empire - Pax Britannica - and I would think it was in there. but you might already know this or have read it. I love Jan Morris.

Google Scholar turns up possibly useful results on the search term "floating prisons."

Ah ha! Intolerable Hulks is what I am looking for, I think.

I never would've noticed except for this conversation, but today I saw Intolerable Hulks here in the reference section of the Tasmania State Library. and thought of you!

Hopefully someplace closer than the Tasmania State Library will also have it available! :)
