Rules for outfitting my children:

1. No monkeys.
2. No cherries.

I'm guessing that means absolutely no monkeys with cherries.

If it's on a hoodie or something, no.

I get no monkeys. Why no cherries?

Ah, OK, I wondered if it was in that vein.

For some reason big ol' cherry appliques are really popular hipster design elements for girls' dresses and such, and after a certain point a switch just flipped in my head.

I'd never thought of this, but you're spot on. Guess I'm going to barf every time I see these two together now.

Interesting. M loves his monkeys, although I can guess why you have a no-monkey rule. I'm trying to hold to a no-camo rule, as well as a no princesses rule. M grabs any pink that shows up as his due. A's far more into dinosaurs.

Why no monkeys? I can make conjectures, but I don't want to assume I get it.

G. doesn't want the girls' apparel to reinforce stereotypes about black people and monkeys, especially when they're too young to understand the connotations themselves.

Got it. That makes sense. I had a feeling that's where that one was going. I so often think of little kids as monkeys cuz of their propensity for clamor all over everything, but that makes total sense.
