Feb. 24th, 2012 10:17 pmI think I may have found a new Friday ritual for me and the twins while Steven is out of the country and thus unable to drop us off at Stephanie Pepitone's music class in the mornings.
Speaking of which, I want to wholeheartedly recommend Stephanie's "Rockin' Kids Sing-a-Long" classes at La Peña to anyone who might be interested. Acoustic punk kid's songs! I mean, heavy emphasis on the "kid," but very pleasant. We also love her periodic Bounce Rock Skate Roll East Oakland Play Dates at Youth Uprising Skate Park. But, alas, public transit being what it is these days, my ability to make a set time in the mornings is limited. So music class is out for now.
Instead, today we went down to MOCHA (a.k.a. The Museum of Children's Art) and the Old Oakland Farmer's Market. Free apples for the kids! I didn't have much cash so I didn't pick up hen's eggs or duck eggs or anything more than our free fruit. Or popcorn, which I have promised to buy next Friday for the ladies. We danced to the live music and left a dollar -- I had to show April where to drop the money so it didn't end up in the sewer grate.
We ate lunch at Food Coma Cafe, which offers sweet and savory crepes plus banh mi. The sandwich (and milk tea) was fine but nothing to write home about. The honey and banana crepe that I ordered for the girls was fantastic. April refused to even try a single bite, alas. Her loss. I ate her half for her. Simone enthusiastically licked up every stray drop of honey she could reach.
Then we went to the museum and made magic wands with glitter paint (MOCHA's theme this week was "shiny things"). April spent much of her time playing in the play house instead of committing art, but let's just call that "dramatic arts."
Also, the big kids talked to Simone all day, which is a Big Issue right now in Twinland.
All in all, it was a good outing. We're taking full advantage of the lovely weather for as long as it lasts. Yesterday we went to the library, where the girls sat quietly and "read" comic books (April is apparently a Dragon Ball Z fan), then to the playground where we ran into one of their preschool compatriots. Then to ice cream, and the new Flipside burgers on Lakeshore for a late lunch -- thumbs up, even if they look like a clone of Urban Burgers on Mission -- and then G. picked us up for a drive with the windows down through the millionaire's houses of the Oakland hills.
Plus, if I drag them around all day, they take naps in the afternoon and I can get some work done! Everybody's happy.
