Tried something new for a barbecue on Sunday, a marinated chicken skewer sort of thing. G. kept referring to it as my "secret recipe," which was actually kind of disconcerting. It's not a secret recipe, although it does have a secret ingredient.

Mayonnaise. Mayonnaise, lemon, and garlic, plus some spices (which were really heavily improvised, a pinch of cinnamon and a pinch of allspice, a couple pinches of "Turkish seasoning mix"). The mayo helps keep the seasonings in place during the marinating process.

I think they could have stood a little longer marinating time, but that's OK, they were still tasty. I really want to eat them in a pita with some yogurt sauce and leafy green stuff someday.

It was almost as good as the infamous yogurt-marinated chicken, but not quite. I'll be making that later in the week.

In other news, the building manager came to look at my fridge on Friday. He told me the problem with my door was that I had too many items in the door shelves, which were making the door too heavy and pulling it downward, thus the gap.

I was dubious of his explanation, but lo and behold, when I halved the shelf load, my fridge is now miraculously recovered. Damn Hotpoint design flaws. Now where the hell am I going to fit all these jars of pickles and olives and such? My fridge was already slightly on the overcrowded side (it's smaller than I'd like).

Believe it or not, mayonnaise is also the secret ingredient in cooking fresh salmon. I would never believe this if my sister-in-law hadn't convinced me.

A good little compact refriderator would be a good addition. It did wonders for us.

Hm. Definitely worth considering. The big question is, where would we put it?

S. always recommends hanging things from the ceiling.
