1. Elizabeth Hand's Bride of Frankenstein: Pandora's Bride is my kind of trashy novel. It's chock-full of Weimar Germany-era ridiculousness: Lola and Lulu both appear -- no not Marlene and Louise, Lola and Lulu. Various characters from Fritz Lang movies are crucial to the plot. Christopher Isherwood stops by, too. And the Wild Boys. It's all tossed together and then sandwiched between two layers of completely delicious gender politics. By which I mean it is way more ambitious than it needed to be but never forgets that it's a mass market paperback take on a classic movie monster published by Dark Horse.

2. So it turns out the easiest way to get to Big Frog Park in Oakland is to take BART instead of a bus. So today, that's what we did, and spent the afternoon in the company of several Twins By the Bay families. April and Simone had a chance to play separately, which was good for them both. They had a chance to wander around the park outside the confines of the play structure, which was also good for them both and also for me, if also stretching my limits, as they took off in different directions and I had to trust that other parents (and other older children) would help keep track of everyone's whereabouts.

Also I got to play with babies. April in particular is v. entertaining in her concern for communicating what babies want to adults. Suddenly she has words! On behalf of the voiceless and downtrodden!

We spent all afternoon in the park. 3+ hours. It was glorious.

3. In the morning, before music class, we toured a garden store with an emphasis on succulents and cacti, with [personal profile] wild_irises. Simone learned that the cacti may look soft and pettable but it still bites.

4. New food adventures for the twins include carnitas, squeezable yogurt.

5. I think I may have a bit of sunburn.
