In Which I Am A Hopeless Nerd

pantryslutAt the parents education meeting last night, one of the preschool teachers mentioned the "zone of proximal development" in describing how they support certain developmental stages.
It took all I had not to shout out "ZPD!" or launch into a discussion of the research project I worked on as an undergrad, back in the dark ages and all. It wasn't even my field, but that's never stopped me before.
I did wiggle in my seat and whisper to G., who smiled at me with that loving look he gives me when I am going on about something obtusely theoretical. And I didn't even mention Vygotsky! I simply purred about a three-letter acronym like it was an old friend. Which it was.
So, OK. I fess up. I am a Parenting and Early Childhood Development Nerd. After they turn 8, though, it's all dark country to me too.
