I had a vague, intellectual appreciation of what Prince was trying to do for a while. Then I heard Richard Thompson sing "Kiss." Omigod. The short CD with that and "So Ben Ca Bon Tempo" is NOT work safe, just because I melt into a puddle.

My admiration for Prince went up a thousandfold when it became clear what "the artist formerly known as Prince" shtick was about. I do believe he's the only performer to have beaten the record companies at their own control game, playing strictly by the rules. What's more he did it with flair, creativity, and sales-savvy. (Madonna is the only other one I know who comes close.)

Lionizing descriptions of him should always include this superhuman feat.
