pantryslutBy the way, I am watching the basketball series. It probably won't surprise those of you who know anything about sports at all to learn that I am rooting for the Pistons.
Because I like ugly, grind-it-out, defensive, rebound-heavy basketball. So there. Besides, the Pistons play better as a team rather than as a collection of All-Stars, and I always like to see that. (That's one reason why I prefer college ball.)
OK, I also have a little crush on a player or two. Or maybe it's just that tattoo.
(It's certainly not a regional thing -- remember, though I grew up in Michigan, my family was from Chicago, and that's the city we naturally gravitated to.)
More fun, though, is reading the sports writing about this series. You think people in the US aren't aware of class dynamics? Sports writers are. Sometimes they talk about it in rather cliched ways -- "the auto-working, inner-city-thumping, winter-hardened Pistons" -- but at least they're talking about it.
Of course, it makes me giggle, because the Pistons play in Auburn Hills, which, trust me, is a far ways from being a blue-collar town. My brother in fact has been known to grouse that they should re-name themselves the Auburn Hills Pistons, because they are *so* trading on the mystique of Detroit without actually sullying themselves with the city proper. But that's the story of the city of Detroit in a nutshell, isn't it?
