There doesn't seem to be any consistency from vendor to vendor. We've got some Twinings' Russsian Caravan as a hand-me-down from a friend, and it has a strong but not particularly smoky flavor. Another friend who drinks a lot of tea has Russian Caravan tea from a different source, and it tastes like lapsang souchong.
I wouldn't expect too much consistency from vendor to vendor. Russian-style tea is a loose concept anyway, though I like it very much. But the TeaSource catalog copy said "a hint of smokiness." This is more than a hint! Maybe it will be mellower in the cup than it is in the bag.
Yeah, I often cut my Caravan and Lapsang Souchong. But I still maintain that Freed, Teller, and Freed is the best source for tea around. family owned since before the earthquake.
ah, they closed their store a few years ago. You gotta call 'em up now. I'm sure they'll send you their catalogue. I've never investigated but I have a feeling they just work from their home in South City.

Their Earl Grey is the best I've ever had. It has little bits of lavender in it. yum.
