Due to various moving-related snafus, I have been unable to pick up my box of organic veggies (from Terra Firma Farm, A "subscription farm" or CSA) for three weeks running. It seems that when you move from one side of the bay to the other, your pickup day changes. For nearly seven years, my pickup day has been Thursday. Now it's Wednesday. Oops. Guess who forgot about the rescheduled box pick-up yesterday? Steven was out all night, I had no car, I couldn't get to the pickup site by public transportation.

Update: Steven just walked in the door carrying our salvaged box! I'm sure not all of the veggies will be edible, having sat underneath someone's porch overnight. But my exile from organic produce is over.

Yes, yes, I do have recourse to farmer's markets and the Berkeley Bowl, and I have visited both these past few weeks. But after so many years of being a Terra Firma subscriber, I am apparently very attuned to the cycles of the season in Yolo County, California, where the farm is located. I want my Delicata squash! Apples and pears! Green beans! Canary melons and eggplant! And most of all, red Gypsy bell peppers.

And no, getting a delivered box from a broker (like "The Box," a very popular option here in the Bay Area) is not the same. I know several people who like it very much, and more power to them, but it's just not for me. Call me a fan of vegetal terroir.
