More About My Mother
Apr. 15th, 2008 09:41 amI had another enjoyable conversation with my mother yesterday. I was following up on something her parents had said over the weekend about her coming to visit soon, sometime late in my pregnancy or shortly after. News to me! I thought, but didn't say. And then I double-checked.
We discussed, among other things, the very strong societal assumption that a woman's mother will come attend to her when she gives birth. I confessed that, until I got knocked up, I wasn't aware that this was traditional or expected. (Relatives, yes. That specific? No.) "Really?" Mom said. "That's probably because we never did it." Well, exactly. And a good mirror of my upbringing in general :)
I told her I'd been telling people that she had classes to teach, and she told me that several of her colleagues had spontaneously offered to cover a few sessions of her classes in case she needed to fly out here, and then she said she'd told them it wasn't necessary as far as she knew, b/c she hadn't been invited. "We can fix that," I said. "You're certainly welcome if you want to, although I don't have any idea where we'd put you. Because I don't even have any idea where we're going to fit twins in here, either." And we laughed together. I think she was honestly a little bit touched by the offer, such as it was.
