Part of the appeal of the idea of serial killers is tidiness. Assign an unsolved murder to a serial killer--most especially, a theoretical serial killer--and, among other things, you narrow the band of violence. It's contained within the parameters of one man's madness. You don't have to think about how there's yet another man out there who's gotten away with the murder of yet another woman. About how suddenly more sinister the entire culture feels if it isn't just one or two or a handful of diligent practitioners to blame.
