Hawks and Turtles
May. 11th, 2003 11:28 amI saw a hawk yesterday, crouched over a dead pigeon in the middle of the road. At first it looked like one of those owl sculptures, left mysteriously on the asphalt, But then it took its catch and sailed into the trees growing in the divider.
I've honestly never seen a hawk that close before.
I don't know what kind it was. Its head was fawn, its wings darker. It had a very square head, and I'd say was medium-sized. Perhaps a kite of some sort?
I also saw turtled three times yesterday. First, two at Portrero Gardens, sunning themselves in the pool. Later, someone was walking their big tortoise on Clement ("Myrtle the Turtle," he said). Finally, I stopped into a Chinese fish market and saw three different kinds of eating turtles for sale. Which was kind of sad after the first two encounters.
