Yesterday [personal profile] imnotandrei had the day off, so we braved the cold weather for an outing with the kids. First we took them to Phil's Sliders in Berkeley for lunch. Kid-sized burgers, a long chalkboard wall, and "potato tots" (think grown-up tater tots, brown and crunchy on the outside and hash-soft on the inside), plus homemade sodas and shakes. Very bare bones, but very welcoming nonetheless.

And just a couple blocks away from Habitot (and also, for you comics fans, next door to the comics shop -- the girls had fun choosing which superhero they wanted to be when they grew up). Convenient, especially as it was much too cold to play outside anywhere. So my daughters spent a couple hours pretending to be astronauts and pouring glitter on top of glue-covered paper and painting their faces in a rainbow.

I noticed that it's now Simone who tends to pick up a follower boy (or several), because she's good at articulating a game and assigning roles, so kids who like structure are easily drawn into her orbit. Yesterday the astronauts were looking for aliens. Meanwhile, April banged on the keyboards and helmed the phone in the rocket ship.

Today was the first day G. was working full-time on a school day and thus unable to pick up the kids from preschool. April had to be pulled bodily from the yard before she would come home with me. Then she had to explore all the closets. And hop on each stepping stone in the front yard. Only then did she consent to leave with me.
