I really should write up more of my Adventures in Media With Children Along, shouldn't I?

Just so you know it's not always sunshine and roses over here with the girls, today:

1. Simone bit off a chunk of a page of Where the Wild Things Are. (Cue irony.) She's been having a lot of problems lately with unselfconscious biting and chewing of things. She was very upset when I pointed out what she'd done to the book. I'm not sure how to handle this particular problem, although I've discussed it some with Shayna and we're going to try to give her a teething necklace to see if it helps. I mean, obviously she's not teething, there's something else sensory going on. It's a bit bewildering.

2. April decided to try to pomade her own hair just before naptime. She now looks like a greaser. Also I need a new tub of pomade. And another discussion of "keep out of the stuff in the bathroom." (All that is within reach is nontoxic, but there's still lots available to make a mess with.)

Also not today but in general, we're starting to see Simone pull away from April in terms of language skills, and it seems to be causing April a bit of distress. The clearest example I have at hand is that Simone likes to play a game at least once a day of "Let's say words that start with the letter {x]!" When it's April's turn to play, she's taken to mumbling "I don't know." I can keep her engaged and happy by taking her turn and naming favorite words of hers for her, but still: :(

I've also noticed an uptick in April's shyness. I don't know if there's a connection or if it's coincidence.

I should note that April seems perfectly normal and on track developmentally (and she loves "reading" books to herself -- had a group convinced last month that she was sight reading Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? rather than merely having memorized it). It's the dynamic that I'm a bit worried about.

Some more solo time might help a bit, perhaps.
