"Natural Born Celebrities" was the exact right book to get. I am pleased already with the way the author deconstructs "fame" and "celebrity" and also points at (somewhat inadvertently, I think) an important tension between the anonymous serial killer and the known criminal. Which is extremely relevant.

Also I can read it after dark without inducing nightmares.

(He's making me chase down articles in academic journals, though. "Dear preschool, can you keep the kids until 3 today? I'm going to be in Berkeley photocopying my butt off.")

Contemplating issues of the fame and celebrity of criminals while researching serial killers in the wake of a recent mass shooting is, well, uncomfortable. It's probably glib to think that the mass killer has figured out how to close that gap between successful anonymity and known-but-caught that I mentioned in my previous post. But it still hovers in my mind.
