A random philosophical reflection
Mar. 9th, 2003 02:27 pmI chafe at the bonds of politeness.
My one guiding moral principle is simple: it's the Silver Rule. Don't do onto others as you would not have done unto you.
It's subtly different than the better-known Golden Rule, and although conventional wisdom is that a negative statement is less powerful than a positive one, in this case I think the opposite is true. The Silver Rule is a more powerful and flexible principle, overall.
But it does mean that I am denied the venal pleasure of orchestrating someone's well-deserved comeuppance.
Although not from experiencing the indirect pleasure of watching someone receive it from someone else's hand. Mwah hah ha.
But sometimes, I don't want to wait for the universe to dish it out. I want to be tart and vinegary, dark-hearted and witty, and lash out with my full power and vehemence. I'm a writer, after all. My tongue and my pen can both be razor-sharp. And so many people think that this is the way I am all the time already.
I want to be the instrument of Fate.
But it wouldn't be right.
