I just read my first negative review of Sin City outside of LiveJournal. Check out the April 8 issue of Entertainment Weekly if you'e interested.

Quote of the Article: "Call me an insensitive non-fangirl, but if the sacred works of Jane Austen can stand up to freewheeling reinterpretation, then so, too, can heavy-breathing pages about trussed-up little girls and a vile-smelling cartoon pervert known as Yellow Bastard."

Well, yeah, they were hookers, but they had big guns and they weren't owned by pimps or The Mob[tm]. That makes all the difference.

Did I say they had big guns?

I saw them as independent, er, contractors. It's pretty clear on that in the comic too. Neither one makes a Big Deal out of the fact that they are hookers, which is interesting; ie, no one needs to get saved from a life of vice (in The Big Fat Kill anyway,), but needs to defend their right to do business.

It's certainly more interesting than the usual hooker with a heart of gold...

Didn't read it. Read an interesting review on PopMatters that proposed the movie "complicated masculinity" in an interesting fashion. I wish it had developed that idea more.
