CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS:
Itâs time for radical queer writing that skewers the gay mainstreamâs assimilationist ideals of marriage, military service, and adoption. Iâm looking for activist writing by queers who strive to live outside of conventional norms. Resisting Assimilation will use queer identity as a starting point from which to reframe, reclaim, and re-shape the world.
Resisting Assimilation will challenge the commercialized, commodified, and hyper-objectified view of gay/queer identity projected by the mainstream (straight and gay) media. Iâm looking for essays that explore queer struggles to transform gender, revolutionize sexuality, and build community/family outside of traditional models.
As an activist, Iâm drawn to essays that explore and critique specific struggles to resist the monster of assimilation, from sex parties to civil disobedience. Iâm especially drawn to writing that interrogates race, class, gender, sexuality, ability, and all other hierarchies. I would like to see essays that explore how queers fight police brutality, subvert gender rules, resist crackdowns on public sex and sex work, and actively oppose homogenization, globalization and all the other evils of the oh-so-modern world.
Resisting Assimilation will be the rocks we throw through the glass houses of Gaylandia. Submissions may include visual art, as well as flyers, photos from demonstrations and anything else that will fit into a book. Enjoy!
