Sep. 25th, 2003 12:15 pmThe October issue of Girlfriends has an article on gastric bypass surgery.
It suffers from the usual journalistic wishy-washiness. You know, two and only two sides, they both have points, blah blah blah.
But the writer gives herself away in little phrases, like "the size acceptance movement is loath to consider the necessity of surgery." Uh, hon, this surgery remains elective the last time I checked. It is never necessary.
Worse, however, is this one: "But for some women, surgery is the bridge they need to a healthier lifestyle." There is nothing healthy about taking away your body's ability to absorb nutrients, to forcing yourself to take daily supplements to stave off malnutrition. There is nothing healthy about vomiting your food if you eat too fast. Nothing healthy about gallstones, hernias, ulcers, and osteoporosis -- just some of the side effects the article itself mentions.
Yes, I shall be writing a letter to the editor soon. (You should, too! But read the article first, of course. It should be on newsstands shortly.)
