P.S. as we totter toward the blessed end of Protectivist Wedding Week*, I thought I should note that my Girlfriends assignment has morphed into "The 20 [or whatever number we finally settle on due to word count] Most Overlooked Love Songs." The idea being that you can ask your wedding music purveyor to play them, or put 'em on your homemade mix disc, of course.

This is your chance to chime in! I am taking any and all suggestions, and all input will be gratefully appreciated. Genre is unimportant. Lesbian content or subtext is a bonus, but not required. Expansive definitions of "love song" are encouraged, as are subversive ones.

Please help out your romance-impaired professional writer friend here, folks. Thanks.

* I know marriages and weddings are not the same thing, but I loved the alliteration of Wedding Week, so I went with it.

The Dolly Parton is by far the best song here. Though the down the aisle and up the aisle songs were very very sweet.

For years, I hauled around the three mix tapes of wedding-reception music I made -- I still had them long after the relationship was over.

I don't know if you'd want to include anything that's out of print, but a really good one is "The Queer Song" by 2 Nice Girls. (And since it's out of print and somewhat old now, it's probably sadly overlooked these days.) Lyrics here (http://www.elyrics.net/go/t/Two_Nice_Girls/The_Queer_Song/).

Hi Lori! I nominate "You You You You You" and "Heaven in a Black Leather Jacket" by the 6ths, the best of the many side projects of Steven Merritt (from the Magnetic Fields). You might also want to mention his 3-CD opus, "69 Love Songs," for people who want to choose a song together.
