...and an Oroblanco
Mar. 19th, 2003 03:51 pmI had my first oroblanco today as part of lunch.
If I understand it correctly, oroblancos are a cross between a grapefruit and a pomelo. I had three in the fridge (courtesy my weekly produce box from Terra Firma Farm), and this one looked like it was going to go bad if I didn't get to it soon.
"oro" + "blanco" is gold and white, right?
Anyway, I'd been avoiding them because I don't like grapefruit. Too bitter/metallic. Well, the more fool I, because the oroblanco was delicious. *J ust* like a grapefruit without the nastiness.
Also interesting -- it has a huge, thick peel, and a thick membrane, too. But the sections can be pulled out of the membrane by hand easily. So it's a very tactile fruit to peel and prepare.
But I'm not sure that oroblancos are meant for one person alone to eat. I've still got a huge pile of sections on the plate behind me on the kitchen table. They look lovely in the pale, greyish sunlight coming through the window. But I am full.
