Signs of the Apocalypse
Jan. 11th, 2007 10:06 amGenerally speaking, I am not an apocalyptic thinking type of person. I get exasperated when people around me start in on the disasters looming in the near, near future if we don't do something right away, OMG, let the hand-wringing commence. Not that I think there aren't coming crises, and things we can do to avert them too, it's just that I tend to be a "less talk, more action" type of person in this regard.
This is relevant because:
Today, in my e-mail inbox, there was a clear sign of the apocalypse:
My mother had sent me political mail.*
It's not that my mother doesn't have strong political opinions, or that I do not know what they are (or that they differ much from mine except in the details). We have discussed politics many times. They tend to be nuanced, thoughtful discussions. My mother, too, is a "less talk, more action" type of person, but she also tends to spend a lot of time in thoughtful observation before she acts.
So when my mother issues a call for action, you know things are serious.
I fully expect blood moons and the horns of angels and so forth any day now.
*An e-petition to sign, in fact. Very legitimate, b/c, well, she is still my mother.

related, but in a shallow way
Date: 2007-01-11 08:24 pm (UTC)The best cinematic interpretation I've encountered was in a movie called The Rapture. It's cheesy in some places (and David Duchovny with a mullet looks way too much like my ex-husband), but that scene has stuck with me for years mostly due to the many layers of sound in it.
