Despite the fact that Halloween is my favorite holiday and I think it should be an official national one -- forget Columbus Day, I'll take this instead -- I am not doing anything for the occasion.

Zip. Zilch. Nada.

I am not dressing up in costume. I am not going to a party. The building manager says that the likelihood of trick-or-treaters is exceedingly low. I am not even cooking a holiday-themed meal.

OK, I may carve a pumpkin and light some candles. Traditionally, Steven and I watch Something Wicked This Way Comes on this night, but we'll see how that goes, since I'm still on deadline. And we did head out to the drugstore in the middle of the night last night to buy some candy -- for ourselves, if the building manager's right; to share, otherwise.

And you might find me outside somewhere, late in the evening. I'm not sure where yet, as I am new to these, er, haunts. (Suggestions gladly taken.)

I have been known to make offerings to the dead, on this night or the next, and someday I plan to have a midnight picnic in the cemetary. I've built altars to honor the occasion. Even this year, I've hung decorations in the window. I've collected bones and dessicated seed pods and other mementoes of death. Usually, this is My Season, and I revel in it.

But the timing is just so off this year. I am on deadline, I have a performance tomorrow, I've just moved. I feel unsettled, still, and not in the spooky way, just in the can't-focus way. I know I should pause and gather myself somehow, but it hasn't happened.

Maybe I will feel differently once the sun has set.
