There’s A Reason I’m Not Dating A Nerd. I'm just going to wave the text of this at the next person who boggles at the notion that I'm seeing someone outside my subculture. ("You mean, G. doesn't go to cons?!" Fuck, kids, *I* only go to one and a half cons!) And you know, now that we're talking about it, I used to get this shit all the time as a punk girl, too.

Still do, and I'm sorry.

Good read.

Hm, what are you thinking of?

When I teased you about not being punk.

Ah. Apology accepted.

Huh. If I've ever been subjected to that sort of grilling, I've completely overlooked it -- which, I suppose, is a win for me, since I'd find it annoying.

My experience with dating geeks has been that they have strong research skills, shiny minds, and a vast unending willingness to learn. *Good* combination.

It's not like I don't date geeks too. Cf. Steven, you know. And he's even male, and shit. Although not straight, which may need to be taken into account re: the fetishizing of the hot nerd chick.

It's the repeated attitude of "huh? what would you see in a non-geek person? what could you possibly have in common?" -- often associated with the idea that unending willingness to learn, shiny minds, etc. will never be found outside geekdom, just sayin' -- that gets up my nose.

Ah... yes, that would definitely bug me too. (And yeah, I was definitely clear on the "you do date geeks as well" bit :) )

Though I have usually found that if I meet someone who is unendingly interested in learning, shiny-minded, etc., and I introduce that person to my geeky friends, they get along well -- and based on that, they've been known to try out a convention or two and find that tasty too. (Which is a win for me, since I'm lazy and therefore want to do as many things at once as possible.)

Geeky friends, yes. Cons, not so much. And then there's the expense in both time and money. G. would probably have fun hanging out in the bar, though.

A friend of mine who's currently going through an emotionally messy divorce has been consoling herself by killing pixels on Warcraft. In the process, she acquired a rather creepy admirer who appears to think that a woman who plays Warcraft is The Dream Gal and that her rejection of him (as half her age, not good with boundaries, and by the way did I mention the messy divorce?) is a sign that he must Leave The Game Forevah.

This has been ... really kinda freaky to observe.

This comment cut loose a memory -- see my subsequent post.

Creepy, yeah.

mixed relationships are very threatening to subcultures.

Don't think I wasn't aware of the multiple layers of meaning around "mixed relationships" when I wrote this post...

I would never think that.

I'm just hoping other people did...and at least some of them winced.
