I am too lazy to participate in International Pixel-Stained Technopeasantry Day or whatever its official title is. I am too lazy to even link to a proper explanation.
Brief summary for those reading who do not have any science-fictiony friends: some dumb science fiction writer with a position in our professional organization said some dumb things about how giving away our writing for free on the Net wasn't what he was about and would degrade us all sooner or later, etc.
It was dumb. I am in solidarity with those who think it was dumb. Me, I think I should be entitled to do whatever the fuck I want to do with my writing, including giving it away for free sometimes.
In fact, I am one of those people who started their career by giving away my writing for free -- mostly in print at the time, b/c I was writing for zines. But on the web, too, in terms of my time and interest. In those days it was Usenet. These days, it's here. Giving away my writing for free in both venues certainly helped establish my voice and presence, and I have absolutely no regrets.
(Besides, we all know the death of science fiction is doing to be through POD self-publishing, not dissemination via the web. :P)
Anyway, if you want to read my writing for free today via the Web, I recommend my "poetry" tag. There's also one for "fiction" but right now it only has one entry.
