Where did the expression "healthy as a horse" come from? Horses are, after all, notoriously fragile and prone to illness and injury.

Depends on the breed-- Morgans are notoriously healthy. Though any animal subjected to overbreeding is unhealthy. Take your average mixed breed animal - Mustangs for example - and they are tough tough tough. (tangent on) I just remembered that my 4-H horse club was called "The Mixed Breeds." (tangent off)
